Setup guide
Most stores are renting within ten minutes. There are three steps.
1. Make a product rentable
Open RentDay from your Shopify admin and choose Rentable products → Make a product rentable. Pick any product from your catalogue and set:
- Price per day, and optionally a price per week. When a weekly price is set, rentals of 7 days or more use it, and a rental never costs more than the next full week.
- Minimum and maximum days.
- Units available. How many of this item you can rent out at once. RentDay tracks this separately from Shopify inventory.
- Turnaround buffer. Days blocked after each return for cleaning or inspection.
- Deposit. None, a fixed amount, or a percentage of the rental total.
If a product has variants, you can apply the same settings to all of them or to a single variant.
2. Add the date picker to your product page
In Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, open a product template, and Add block → Apps → RentDay date picker. Place it near the Add to cart button and save. The block only appears on products you've made rentable.
By default the theme's own Add to cart button is hidden until dates are chosen, so customers can't buy a rental item without dates. You can turn that off in the block's settings.
3. Test with an order
Open the product on your storefront, pick dates, and check out (use Shopify's test gateway or a 100% discount). The booking appears under Bookings within a few seconds.
How pricing and deposits work
When a customer adds a rental to the cart, RentDay recalculates the line's price from your rates and the number of days. If a deposit applies, the line is split into two at checkout: the rental and a separate Rental deposit (refundable) line. RentDay creates that deposit product automatically; don't delete it.
To refund a deposit, open the order in Shopify and refund the deposit line after the return. Then mark the booking Deposit refunded in RentDay so it drops off your to-do list.
Bookings
- Upcoming: starts in the future. Out now: currently rented. Overdue: past the return date and not marked returned.
- Needs review: an order came in for dates that conflict with another booking or your rules (this can happen if two customers check out within seconds). Approve it or cancel it and contact the customer.
- Manual bookings don't create Shopify orders. Use them for phone bookings you invoice separately, or choose Block dates to hold units back.
Blackout dates
Close the whole store (holidays) or a single product for a date range. Customers can't start or span a rental across a blackout.
Reminders and calendar feed (Pro)
Turn on reminders in Settings and choose how many days before pick-up and return they go out. Overdue reminders go out the day after a missed return. The calendar feed URL in Settings can be subscribed to from Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook.
